When we think of really terrific destinations to find great sights and experiences, we somehow tend to think of the coasts of America. And to be sure, from the California to Washington State to the eastern seaboard, these states boast some of the most exciting vacation destinations we have in this country. But it’s never a good idea to overlook the wonderful locations located dead center in the middle the country for that experience of the Midwest that will be as unique as your trip to Boston or San Francisco.

Any attempt to really come to appreciate the amazing sightseeing that is possible in America would have to include stops in some of the country’s truly great cities. For some reason when we think of outstanding cities of America, we tend to drift to the coasts. And to be sure from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle to the west to New York, Boston and Washington to the east, there are some amazing American cities on those two coasts.

When you first arrive in this city, you could be forgiven for not realizing that this is actually the state capital of Illinois – it lacks the hustle and bustle usually associated with most state capitals, and certainly lacks the energy of Illinois’s most famous city, Chicago. However, the gentle sereneness of Springfield are in keeping with its history, for this is Lincoln’s town. He was part of the group of people responsible for making Springfield the state capital, and this is his final resting place.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial – Where Past Presidents Rule the Landscape -

Located near Keystone, South Dakota, is the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Originally commissioned as a way of encouraging more visitors to an area where the local economy needs tourists, the 18m sculpture was started in 1927 and completed in 1947. The memorial depicts facial likenesses of past Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, and is responsible for bringing around 2 million visitors to the Dakota area each year.

One of the most unusual bed and breakfasts is found in historic Galena, Illinois. This is a nature lovers delight. The Wild Turkey bed and breakfast uses a farmhouse theme. Set on 26 acres of some of Illinois most scenic land. Flocks of wild turkeys roost in the trees surrounding the farmhouse. The neighbors are very quiet. Sitting on the back porch you can watch the deer and many varieties of birds that live in the abundant trees and dine from the many feeders below. The wild turkey is so passionate about the wildlife that its three bedrooms are named after some of the local variety of birds.

Tis the dream of many to spend the night in a bank. Well that opportunity has just presented itself via The Landmark Inn, in Oberlin, Kansas. The 1886 bank of Oberlin has been converted into the modern bed and breakfast now called the Landmark Inn. The name even celebrates two major events, the opening of the US land office and the founding of the bank of Oberlin. Each of the rooms celebrates a special landmark or person in Oberlin or Kansas history. Meals are served in the teller room restaurant.
